A How to Guide: Creating Effective Social Media Content

It’s undeniable that social media is one of the most dominant digital platforms, making it an essential component for companies wanting to establish their digital presence.

Not only is social media an easily accessible platform, but it's effective in multiplying exposure for people and brands. This is why you see companies establishing their presence in more informal ways, such as Taco Bell or Starbucks commenting unhingeed responses and other companies like Dr.Suess or Walmart posting their own takes on social media trends. Brands are trying to integrate themselves into the culture of social media, and their campaigns are paying off.

This is how you also see effective political campaigns from politicians like recent NYC Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani and Deja Foxx, who ran for Arizona’s 7th congressional district. Both individuals skyrocketed in popularity due to many reasons but were able to capitalize on the power of social media through producing engaging content that makes you pause, reflect, and even talk about it well past your first watch. In the 2025 mayoral debate, Andrew Cuomo, who ran against Mamdani, said that he “didn’t do enough on social media”, which led him to lose the Primary Election and just recently the mayoral election. It’s astonishing to see how Cuomo, with 40 years of experience in public service under his belt, was beaten out by Mamdani, who only has about 5 years.

So what are strategies to making social media content effective?

Tip #1: Quality

TikTok recommends keeping videos between 21 and 34 seconds long, according to Loomly. Even more striking is the fact that users typically spend only 3 to 5 seconds on a video before deciding whether to keep watching or swipe away. These numbers are shrinking, and creators need to act fast to capture attention.

In this fast-paced environment, content must be concise and engaging from the very first moment. That means trimming filler words, tightening scripts, and cutting unnecessary scenes. Every second counts. One effective strategy is breaking longer videos into parts. Not only does this make each segment easier to digest, but it also encourages viewers to explore your profile to find the rest of the story. When done well, this approach boosts engagement and builds curiosity.

To hook viewers immediately, start with a compelling opening line. Phrases like “What if I told you…” or “This is the most effective way to…” are proven attention-grabbers. These hooks spark curiosity and signal value, prompting users to stay for the payoff.

Beyond scripting, visual and audio elements play a huge role. A unique camera angle can make your video stand out in a crowded feed. Using a recognizable or trending song can also create instant familiarity, making users more likely to pause and watch. These small creative choices can make a big difference in retention.

The goal is to create content that’s both eye-catching and concise. You want viewers to stop scrolling, stay engaged, and feel compelled to interact.

Tip #2: Timing

Tip #3: Information

Last but certainly not least, the quality of information in any piece of content, especially video, must meet high standards of relevancy, accuracy, and value. In a world where attention is currency, it’s tempting to chase shock value or viral trends. However, what truly sets a campaign apart is its ability to be honest. Authenticity is more than a buzzword; it is the foundation of trust. You can craft a visually stunning or emotionally gripping story, but if it lacks truth, the impact will not last. Audiences are more discerning than ever, and they can sense when something feels off.

There is a growing fatigue around content that feels hollow or misleading. Many people have experienced the disappointment of investing time into a video or article, only to realize it was built on low-effort production or false claims. That kind of content often time fails to engage audiences and build a deeper connection.

This is part of the reason why skepticism around generative AI continues to grow in creative spaces. It is not that people are against innovation. They value intention. When creators rely solely on AI without curating real footage, conducting research, or adding their own perspective, the result often feels detached and impersonal. Viewers want to know that someone cared enough to dig deeper and tell a story that matters.

High-quality information is the backbone of meaningful content. It builds credibility, fosters trust, and ensures that audiences return for more. Without it, even the most creative formats or flashy visuals fall flat, leaving viewers skeptical and disengaged.

Each of these three tips are are essentials that I’ve seen as a consumer, as well as a social media professional. When done right, your ability to tell your story and spark connection will become more effective in reaching audiences. Overall, if you follow this how to guide and implement tips for quality, timing, and information, you’ll have a great foundation for your next compelling and even viral content.
